What To “Pair” with Sock Garters

The consensus is in: amongst a certain fashionable crowd, sock garters are in as well.

What can one wear with sock garters so they don’t look odd or too masculine? Tips are to go vintage, classy, and ether feminine or tongue-in-chic masculine. (Vintage or menswear keep it all in a style family people can recognize and stylistas can admire.)

Don’t forget if you want that lift without visible garters, a longer dress/skirt or pants can be worn (as seen in a few items).

Items in this set:
Dolce & Gabbana dress, 560 GBP
Odd Molly dress, 260 GBP
Ebay.com dress, $135
Modcloth.com dress, $70
PPQ dress, 65 GBP

What do you think of sock garters? How do you think they could/should be worn?

Beyond Fashion

Edited by Retro Chick

This weeks Links à la Mode blows away any preconceived ideas of the narcissistic fashion blogger posting endless outfit photos and magazine shoots  by covering a huge array of topics. Ranging from Dream Sequins whimsical birthday tea party to High Fashion Girls detailed examination of racism in fashion magazines, these posts demonstrate what we’re capable of and the communities we can build.

Of course, being fashion bloggers there are also some great outfits to be found and our bloggers this week have looked at: movies, from Bollywood to Sci fi; their pyjama drawers; and even their cleaning cupboard in their ceaseless search to bring you fashion inspiration.

As ever there’s many more exciting links on the original forum thread

Enjoy!

What’s a Style-but-Not-Shopping Blog to Do on Black Friday?

Take off? :-) I’m not saying I feel totally free to take the long Thanksgiving weekend away from trying to propel the blog, no. But I don’t have to blog about deals, squeals, headaches; more importantly I don’t *need* to write about less intellectual topics if I don’t want to.

Black Friday Comic

Black Friday Comic

Freedommmm! Haha.

I used to pressure myself into writing gift guides, sale notices, etc. I’d fall behind trying to do. it. all. One blog can never post alllll of the news from just one writer. I now let it go. (Freedom again.)

What the recession has helped me realize is there can be a separate world of fashion from buying and other shallow occupations that are equally or more valid for post topics. I not only cannot shop much right now, but I realized I didn’t ever really want to have a shopping-centric blog in the first place. (OK except for that first month when I just wanted to post pretty shoe pics.)

I love design, obviously. I love fashion and gosh I love shopping when I can … but I’m an intellectual and a serious writer – I should have a narrow focus that I’m happier working in.

And I am very happy with the new direction of the blog. It can happily live side-by-side with my prepping my business.

Blogs with different angles fare better anyway.

Hallelujah.

The “Boob” Dress.

Are you wondering what I mean? Is this a sexy low-cut number? Oh come on don’t you know the blog?! ;-) Read and look on.

Indie designer Emma Bell designs a lot of “crazy” if you will, but her frocks are all open to personal style interpretation until we get to the round things with … nipples? … on the chest, especially on this piece:

Those couldn’t be cupcakes, could they? Cupcakes atop breasts? Who does that! Other colors simply look like dyed fried eggs, so they’re marginally better. Get a dose of bright cheer from the Emma Bell website, if you dare.

Phoebe Philo’s 1st Bag Collection for Céline, No Paddington-Level “ITs”?

phoebe-philo-celine

Former IT-maker and the designer who propelled Chloé into fashionista-fame, disappointedly went light on the handbags for her 1st collection at her new brand, Céline.

The collection’s purses are not all duds, but I don’t think any one of them is a must-have or even really, fabulously design-droolworthy. I’m not expecting outrageously oversized elements, but this range feels actually under-designed.

We wonder how the leather is, with bags made with sturdy structures and python prints, we aren’t holding our breath to run and touch at Neiman’s.

But your vote counts! What do you think? IT, $h-t, or Forgittable?

Rihanna from the red carpet of last night’s American Music Awards. Looking over the top in a feminine flower “punched” gown from Marchesa. We love it, but do you think it’s sew-haute or so overdone?

Some Foods DO Taste as Good as Skinny Feels

I can know this because I have been skinny.

Courtesy of Monfresh @ Flickr

Some foods do taste wonderful, but their calories or other disadvantages make them easier to avoid while dieting. Some foods are just worth it, still.

Everyone has their own preferences, like some foodies need only gourmet and those with sweet teeth can drool over any dessert/snack foods.

Starbucks’ Hot Chocolate with a shot of peppermint may taste awesome, but I’m lactose intolerant (erm, less tolerant) so that’s off my menu for now while I’m also cutting calories.

One food we can all agree on; Filet Mignon.

Come on, Kate. Nothing? Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels? Really? Really!?!

You lie, miss chienne, you just must lie.

Sincerely, Ella.

P.S. Why, I think I just might have one of those Keebler sandwich cookies as a post-breakfast snack. Don’t mind if I do – don’t mind it at all. ;-)

Attack of the Monster Pump! Another Horror Shoe…

camilla-monster-pumps

Camilla Skovgaard fringe pumps

Camilla Skovgaard is an up-and-coming footwear designer. See this other shoe that got acclaim via FabSugar.

She’s gotten a lot of attention already, but this shoe might horrify too much.

I know fringe is a big trend but it seems instead of designers inventing subtle variations they seem to go. all. out!

Out they are indeed, $h-t!

I mean this shoe looks like a mix of Native American moccasin and … furry hoof.

Another scary shoe like the toeless boot. Gosh, which is worse?

Weekend Wear: Fall/Winter Love, Moderate Climate

Laid Back Friday; a stylist look for your inspration:Weekend Wear - Moderate Fall Climate

Items in this set:
Delias.com sweater, $45
TopShop shorts, 28 GBP
UGG Australia slippers, $80
GAP bag, $50
Kabiri.co.uk necklace, 260 GBP

I’ve been really inspired to go out with my J. Crew knit bag and Delia’s cardigan with zebra stripes, but I changed that feel up for this Polyvore set because I could not find a suitable cream woolly bag online.

There are many climates across the globe I know, and I know this look may be a bit much – but it’s meant to be an inspiration.

The whole ensemble is really affordable save for that necklace, but I would have wanted to browse Etsy for something woolly (not allowed on Polyvore).

All in all I’m just really eager for the weekend. The boy wants to hang inside over the two days and I want to go out and show off my style! ;-)
